Aquatic nets

The Coleopterist interested in collecting aquatic beetles will make good use of a high quality aquatic net.  Aquatic nets come in several different net designs with the one figured here being the ‘D” style net.  The straight side of the net is placed against the substrate and propelled back and forth through the water with the net rim just above or skimming the substrate.  The author has good success with performing a sweeping figure eight which helps churn up the bottom dislodging the beetles.  In weeds the net can be drug through the vegetation. In addition, silt and mud can be sampled sparingly though as not to clog the net.  The rim is extremely tough with the fine mesh net set back from the front rim and in from the back edge of the canvas net bag thus offering protection from debris that the net is swept through.  The handle is long a stout giving a good reach in a variety of aquatic habitats.  Net featured is a BioQuip Product.
